Sustained release products are helping to prolong the dosage intervals and thereby increase patient compliance. Polyvinylacetate is particularly suitable for the manufacturing of pH-independent sustained release formulations. As it contains no ionic groups it shows no interaction with most of the commonly used APIs and excipients. Based on this polymer BASF developed two highly functional excipients for the pharmaceutical industry. The spray dried powder grade (Kollidon SR) is recommended to formulate sustained release matrix tablets manufactured using direct compression technologie whereas the 30% aequous dispersion (Kollicoat SR 30 D) is being used to coat granules, pellets or even tablets.
